Coorg (Kodagu)
Karnataka's Scotland — the definitive Bangalore road trip
245 km 5–6 hrs Family · Couples Oct–Mar

Coorg is Bangalore's most popular weekend road trip and it fully deserves the reputation. Mysore
6-lane expressway + palace grandeur — the perfect day drive
150 km 2.5–3 hrs Family · All Year-round

The Bangalore–Mysore Expressway (NH 275) is a joy to drive — 6 wide lanes, well-lit, minimal trucks, and fuel/food stops every 20 km. It's one of the fastest inter-city drives in Karnataka. At Mysore, the Amba Vilas Palace rivals any in India — the illuminated palace on Sunday evenings is a bucket-list experience. Mysore Zoo is among India's finest. Plan a morning departure, reach by 9 AM, and you can cover palace, zoo, Chamundi Hills and Brindavan Gardens in one long day.

Best Route
  • Bangalore → NH 275 (Mysore Expressway) → Mysore
  • Toll: ₹110–₹140 one-way depending on vehicle type
  • NEVER take the old Mysore Road — use the expressway only

  • Mysore Zoo — one of India's top-ranked zoos
  • Chamundi Hills — 13 km twisty drive from Mysore city

Chikmagalur
Coffee highlands and Karnataka's highest peak
245 km 5 hrs Couples · Nature Oct–Feb

Chikmagalur sits at the feet of Mullayanagiri — Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 m. The drive through Hassan and Belur gives you the bonus of the Hoysala temple circuit on the way. The last 60 km into Chikmagalur town gains elevation dramatically through coffee estates, and the forest roads towards Bababudangiri are among the prettiest drives in Karnataka. The town has excellent resorts — many inside working coffee estates where you can pick, process and drink your own coffee.

Ooty (Udhagamandalam)
Nilgiri queen — classic hill station, dramatic ghat drive
265 km 5–6 hrs Family · Couples Oct–Jun

Ooty is the quintessential South India hill station — at 2,240 m, it's noticeably cooler than Bangalore with colonial-era hotels, tea plantations, botanical gardens and the famous Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The best car route is via the Mysore Expressway to Gudalur, then up the Nilgiri ghat from Gudalur side — significantly wider and easier than the Mettupalayam ghat. The Ooty–Coonoor stretch (20 km) is one of the most beautiful drives in South India.

Best Route
  • Bangalore → Mysore Expressway → Mysore → Nanjangud → Gudalur → Ooty
  • This avoids the Bandipur night driving restriction zone
  • Alternate: via Hosur → Mettupalayam → Ooty ghat (36 hairpin bends)

The NH 67 from Bangalore to Hospet (nearest town) is a well-maintained 4-lane highway. The landscape changes dramatically north of Tumkur — the Deccan turns rocky and ancient. 560 km 9–10 hrs Friends · Couples Oct–Mar

Break the journey at Hubli (330 km) for a night, or push through if you start at 4 AM. Once in Goa, the roads between beaches are flat and easy. Pack 3 nights minimum — North Goa for beaches and nightlife, South Goa for quiet and seafood.

Pepper vines climb every tree, coffee estates line the road, and the air at 949 m elevation is noticeably cooler and cleaner. Monsoon months (Jun–Sep) are extraordinary here — every hillside runs with waterfalls, and the road is surrounded by intense green. Comfortable for sedan and hatchback alike.

Road Trip Tips from Bangalore

🚗
Leave Before 5 AM
Beat Bangalore's notorious traffic — leaving by 4:30–5 AM saves 45–60 minutes on the city exit. The first 30 km (to Hosur, Nelamangala, or NICE Road exit) is where traffic builds up fastest on weekends.
Fill Up Before Ghats
Fill fuel before entering ghat sections — Coorg, Chikmagalur, Ooty ghats have very limited fuel stations. Small stations may not accept cards. Carry ₹500–₹1,000 cash for fuel emergencies.
📱
Download Google Maps Offline
Network coverage drops inside forests (Bandipur, Kabini, Wayanad) and deep ghats. Download the entire route offline in Google Maps the night before leaving.
🦁
Bandipur Night Driving Ban
No vehicles are allowed through Bandipur National Park between 6 PM and 6 AM. Plan Wayanad, Ooty and Coorg (via Mysore route) drive times to clear the forest by 5:30 PM or enter after 6 AM.
🌧️
Monsoon Road Safety
Karnataka ghats in monsoon (Jun–Sep) can have landslides, road cuts and waterfalls flowing across roads. Check road condition updates on Karnataka PWD website or Google Maps before setting out.
🅿️
Book Stays in Advance
Coorg, Chikmagalur and Kabini are heavily booked 3–4 weeks ahead on weekends. For wildlife destinations (Kabini, Wayanad), safari slots fill even faster — book the safari before booking the hotel.
🚗 Best Cars for Bangalore Road Trips

For ghats and off-road (Chikmagalur, Kabini): SUVs — Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV700. For highway drives (Mysore, Hampi, Pondicherry): Any sedan or hatchback works perfectly. For rough forest roads (Mekedatu, Hebbe Falls approach): High-ground-clearance car or 4WD recommended.

⚠️ FASTag is Mandatory on All NHs

All National Highways in India require FASTag — cash lanes are closed or charge double at most toll plazas. Ensure your FASTag is activated and has sufficient balance before leaving Bangalore. Low-balance FASTag is the #1 cause of toll-plaza delays for road trippers.

Car Drive FAQ — Bangalore

Mysore (150 km) is the best — smooth 6-lane expressway, Amba Vilas Palace, Chamundi Hills, zoo, and Brindavan Gardens all in one trip. Other great under-200 km options: Nandi Hills (60 km), Lepakshi (120 km), Shivanasamudra Falls (130 km), and Hogenakkal (180 km).
Mysore (palace + zoo + Brindavan Gardens) is the best 1-day family drive. For an overnight family trip: Coorg (coffee estates, waterfalls, nature) and Ooty (toy train, botanical gardens, lake) are the top picks. Kabini is excellent for older children who love wildlife and safaris.
October to February is ideal — cool temperatures (15–25°C), no rain, clear roads. For waterfall destinations (Shivanasamudra, Hogenakkal, Sakleshpur), July–October is when falls are fullest. Avoid March–May for long drives — daytime heat in the Deccan regions can reach 38°C+.
It's physically possible (560 km, 9–10 hours) but not recommended. The ghat sections after Londa require full concentration and can't be rushed. Most experienced road trippers break at Hubli (330 km, 5 hrs) overnight, then finish to Goa the next morning (230 km, 3.5 hrs). Start at 4 AM if you want to attempt it in one push.
Best route: Bangalore → Mysore Expressway → Mysore → Nanjangud → Gudalur → Ooty (265 km, ~5.5 hrs). This avoids the Bandipur National Park night-driving restriction zone. Alternative: Bangalore → Hosur → Krishnagiri → Mettupalayam → Ooty ghat (36 hairpin bends, very scenic but narrower road on the final 35 km). Both routes are good — choose based on timing.
