Top Bike Ride Destinations from Bangalore

1
Nandi Hills
The classic Bangalore dawn ride — misty, cool, iconic
60 km one-way 1.5 hrs Easy–Moderate Best: Oct–Feb

Nandi Hills is the default first ride for every Bangalore biker — and for good reason. The NH 44 to Chickballapur is smooth and fast, then the ghat road up to 4,851 ft elevation winds through cool forest with sweeping hairpin bends. Leave Bangalore by 4:30 AM to catch sunrise at the top. The mist rolling over the valley at dawn is one of Karnataka's most photographed moments. Get back before 8 AM to avoid weekend crowds and police checkpoints.

Route

  • Last 10 km: winding ghat road, moderate curves
  • Entry gate opens 6 AM (sunrise riders queue from 5:30 AM)

Coffee, mist and the best ghat riding in South India
245 km one-way 5–6 hrs Moderate Best: Oct–Mar

Coorg is the crown jewel of Bangalore bike rides. The route via the Bangalore–Mysore Expressway is buttery smooth for 150 km — then from Kushalnagar the road winds into the Western Ghats through coffee and cardamom plantations. The stretch from Kushalnagar to Madikeri is pure riding joy: rolling curves, fragrant air, misty mornings and occasional elephant crossings. Stay one night in a homestay for the full experience.

Route
  • Bangalore → Mysore Expressway → Mysore → Hunsur → Kushalnagar → Madikeri
  • Or via: Bangalore → Channarayapatna → Hassan → Sakleshpur → Madikeri (more scenic)
  • Total ghat riding: approx 60 km

245 km one-way 5 hrs Moderate Best: Oct–Feb

Chikmagalur sits in the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range — Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 m. The route via Hassan through the NH 75 corridor gives you coffee estates on both sides for miles, with dramatic elevation changes in the last 60 km. The Bababudangiri hills section is particularly spectacular — fog, twisting forest roads and zero traffic. Plan for an overnight stay to do the Mullayanagiri trek at sunrise.

  • Or via NH 75: Bangalore → Nelamangala → Hassan → Chikmagalur

The ultimate ghat ride — endless curves, mist and silence
220 km one-way 4.5 hrs Moderate–Hard Best: Jun–Feb

Sakleshpur is what riders dream about. The NH 75 from Hassan to Sakleshpur cuts through the Western Ghats with relentless curves, coffee and pepper plantations on both sides, and mist that rolls in without warning. Before you ride

Essential Bike Ride Tips from Bangalore

🪖
Always Full-Face Helmet
Karnataka traffic police are strict — no helmet means instant fine. But beyond legality, a full-face helmet is essential safety on ghat roads with loose gravel and wildlife crossings.
Full Tank Before City Exit
Fuel stations thin out after 80–100 km from Bangalore on most routes. Fill up before you leave the city and again at any town before ghat sections.
🗺️
Download Offline Maps
Mobile signal dies in ghat areas and forest sections. Download your route on Google Maps or Maps.me before leaving home. A phone mount on the handlebar is essential.
🌧️
Monsoon Ghat Riding Rules
Ghat roads in monsoon (Jun–Sep) are slippery with wet leaves, waterfalls crossing the road, and fog. Reduce speed, keep headlight on, avoid overtaking, and carry a good rain cover.
🕓
Leave Before 5 AM
For sunrise rides (Nandi Hills, Skandagiri), leave by 4–5 AM. For day trips, leaving before 6 AM avoids city traffic and lets you reach by 9–10 AM before heat builds up.
📋
Carry These Documents
RC book, driving licence, insurance (digital copy accepted), Aadhaar. Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border (Hogenakkal route) may check these. Keep originals, not just photos.
🏍️ Best Bikes for Bangalore Ghat Rides

For ghat roads and overnight trips: Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 390 Adventure, Bajaj Dominar 400, Honda CB300R. For day rides under 150 km: any 150cc+ bike works fine. Ensure tyres are in good condition before any ghat ride — check pressure, tread depth and brakes the day before.

Bike Ride FAQ — Bangalore

Nandi Hills (60 km) is the best for beginners — smooth NH roads, a manageable ghat section at the top, and easily done in 3 hours. Ramanagara (50 km) is even easier — flat highway riding to iconic rocky terrain. Both are doable on any 125cc+ bike and are well-covered by Google Maps.
October to February is the best time — cool temperatures (15–25°C), clear skies, dry roads. Ghat rides are most pleasant. June–September (monsoon) is dramatic for waterfalls but ghat roads are slippery — experienced riders only. March–May is hot — ride only early morning if you must.
Coorg and Chikmagalur are the best overnight rides — both 5–6 hours away with excellent ghat roads, coffee estate homestays, and enough to see for 2 days. Kabini is the best for wildlife — book the forest safari stay in advance. Sakleshpur is less crowded than Coorg and equally scenic.
Full-face helmet, riding gloves, jacket with armour padding, riding boots. Documents: RC, DL, insurance, Aadhaar. Accessories: phone mount, power bank, offline maps downloaded, basic toolkit, tyre puncture spray, first aid kit, rain cover for bag and gear. For overnight: compact change of clothes, toiletries and a bungee cord for your bag.
Yes, it's a well-ridden route. The Bangalore–Mysore Expressway section (150 km) is one of India's smoothest highways. From Mysore to Madikeri (Coorg), the ghat section is well-paved but needs careful riding — especially in rain. Avoid night riding on the ghat portions. Stick to the Hunsur–Kushalnagar–Madikeri route for the best road quality.
